Leaving Time

by Jodi Picoult

What can I say? Jodi Picoult is in my top 5 of authors. Her research and storytelling is impeccable. You may recognize her name from one of our first episodes, The Storyteller: a heavy read but SOOO good. This one definitely did not disappoint.

Jenna is a young girl who believes that her mother is still out there in the world. Her mother, Alice Metcalf, was an elephant researcher and aficionado. Jenna was brought into the world at an elephant sanctuary, but 10 years ago, a tragic “accident” occurred where one person died, one was missing and multiple questions left unanswered. Jenna sets out to find her mother by getting the assistance from a psychic medium (Serenity) and a former detective-now private investigator (Virgil/Vic). Throughout the novel, we learn about elephants, their young, and their grief process as well as go through the journey with Jenna and friends to investigate what happened. Through a twist of events, time is not as it seems and the people who are alive may not actually be alive.

I don’t want to give too much away because there was quite the twist of events that really snags your attention and keeps you loving Picoult more and more. Go check this one out, if not for the story of love between a mother and her child but if you love elephants and want to learn more about their behavior and family dynamics.
