By Bonnie Garmus

Well, this one was supposed to be presented on the podcast, but life happens and we struggled to nail down a date and Kay struggled to get into it. I will admit, it was a tough read. It was intellectual and women’s lib-esque.
Elizabeth is a chemist in a man’a world in the 1960s. She is trying to find her way through the profession and having doors closed in her face due to her gender. She falls in love with another chemist, Calvin, who accepts her intellectual mind and fight for career. She no sooner finds out that she is pregnant with his child when he is killed in a freak accident. She is fired for being an unwed mother and has to find a way to survive with this new baby.
She finds help from a neighbor who nanny’s for her while she gets recruited for a cooking show where she is hardly traditional. Elizabeth lives a sad life of constantly fighting for what she wants and deserves out of life. In the end, karma is served on a silver platter for her and all is made right.
It was a cute story but had a lot of emotion at a time that I struggled emotionally so it felt a little dark for me. Garmus has a good story line and if you enjoy women’s lib issueS, this book is for you. It’s a more highly intellectualized version of The Love Hypothesis.
