Let’sTalk About: When a book is a flop…

Have you ever had high hopes for a book and you get to that point where you want to give up because you’ve been giving it chance after chance like an unhealthy relationship but it just disappoints? It is one of the worst things an avid and dedicated reader can encounter. I’ve been in a season of flops lately, readers.

“The Whisper Network” kind of started it off. Then Kay and I were going to review “Lessons in Chemistry,” but she couldn’t get through it. I, myself, had a hard time getting through it but I finished it. We’ve also had a lot of life stuff go on that interrupted recording scheduling, but also these floppy books that just completely disappointed us. Erica and I were on the schedule for “The Thursday Murder Club,” and we both felt like it was a tough choice. We both got through it, but it was so disorganized I had a hard time following the story and keeping up with characters and how things connected.

I don’t think it’s the fault of the authors completely, I just think sometimes, it’s not the book for you. Book ratings can totally be deceiving. So what do you do when you’ve had several book disappointments in a row? My plan is to read some mindless romance novels that I can get sucked into and revive my palate.

What is your book palate cleanser? Do you try to finish a book or do you quit? How long does it take before you know it’s not going to work out for you?
