Where The Crawdads Sing

by Delia Owens

This one is all the fad these days. It started out on Reese’s Book Club and now it’s been made into a movie with Taylor Swift headlining the soundtrack. I didn’t know what to expect with this one, and it didn’t disappoint. It took me a bit to get into it but once I was in, I was in.

Kya is our main character who we learn is the youngest of several children and her mother abandons the family to escape her father’s abuse. Kya is left alone with her father who doesn’t pay much attention to her but does teach her how to take care of herself and live on the marsh. Kya befriends Tate after her father leaves and he teaches her how to read and write since the kids at school bullied her on the first (and only) day of school.

Tate leaves for college, and Kya feels another feeling of abandonment from everyone in her life. She meets up with Chase Andrews, a star athlete and good ol’ boy in town. He forces himself on her and takes advantage of her. One day, he is found dead and the sheriff suspects murder. Kya is charged with his murder. The ending has a lot of twists and turns and leaves your jaw hanging at the end.

For a first time novelist, I’d say Delia Owens knocked it out of the park. You definitely need to check this one out and quickly. I’m curious to see how the movie measures up!
