So I’m going through a pile of books from my mother-in-law’s book pile that she left behind when she passed away, and this was one of them. She had great taste in some of these beachy, quick, cutesy reads! I loved this book. It also reminded me of a Jodi Picoult-esque novel in that she took a topic (donating eggs and surrogacy), and used it to intertwine into the story.
Jules is a college-aged woman who considers donating eggs after being approached by someone from a Fertility Clinic. She is motivated by helping her alcoholic father. Annie is a stay at home mom with two little boys and they are struggling to pay the bills and she considers surrogacy. Bettina is the daughter of a millionaire New York City businessman who has recently married “India,” and Bettina is not happy. We follow each of these women and how their stories intersect and intertwine. Jules’ donates her egg which is implanted into Annie and uses India’s husband (Bettina’s father’s) sperm. Tragedy strikes some of the women in the midst of this and they all become a part of Rory’s life, the baby born from the donation.
I love these types of books that take a social justice issue, here we see egg donation and pregnancy surrogacy, and turn it into a fictional story that gets you hooked for all the character relationships and dynamics. How about you? Do you get captivated by a social justice issue turned fiction story or does it drive you bonkers?
Where do you get your books from? Do you buy all of them or do you borrow?
