Let’s Talk About…Holiday Books

It’s that time of the year again! Time to pick your holiday favorites to read. I struggle a ton during Christmas time to find a good holiday book that’s going to really entertain me. Last year we read an English novel, the Christmas Bookshop by Jenny Colgan and that definitely did not disappoint. How we, the alternatives or other options are typically Hallmark-esque books that reflect Hallmark movies…predictable and same plot line: girl is unhappy with her job, girl finds a new small town that’s obsessed with Christmas, girl meets native boy who loves Christmas and convinces her to celebrate, girl and boy fall in love, girl decides to leave big city and stay in Christmas small town.

While these books are not for the faint of heart, they get kind of old for the avid reader. We found something a little different this year and it was still a little disappointing. I’ve heard of cozy mysteries that are maybe winter/Christmas-related that might soothe the reader’s soul who wants holiday or seasonal relevant novels.

So what do you do? Do you keep reading your regular stuff and keep your reading hobby out of the Christmas realm? Do you keep trying to find different types of holiday-like genres? Maybe you take the leap and try your hand at writing your own holiday book? Are there classics that you have to read every year, like A Christmas Carol. Keep me posted on what your options have been this year and Christmas’s past!
