by Liz Ireland

Kay and I read this book as our holiday/Christmas book and due to some unforeseen circumstances, we weren’t able to record it. Our plan was to have hot chocolate bombs with some sort of Christmas-esque dip.
April is Mrs. Claus after meeting Nick who was vacationing at her Inn. They fall in love and he has taken over the role of Santa Claus because his father and brother have died and he is next in line, but he’s not the first choice. Well, this is April’s first Christmas in Santaland and there is a murder of a not-so-nice elf. Murder doesn’t happen here though. April gets more involved in the investigation than is expected to her as Mrs. Claus. The snowman Charley is also murdered.
Ireland takes you on an angsty road of April’s misgivings about Santaland, her anxiety about being away from her homeland and her Inn and fighting her new in-laws who don’t appreciate her more “human” qualities.
This one was a 3.5 for me. I absolutely love the idea and concept here, but the storyline was quite young adult genre for me. I usually don’t mind young adult novels, but this one was a little too angsty and hard to keep my attention. I know that Kay felt the same way. This is a trilogy, and I’m not sure that I can commit to this series and if you know me, you know that I can’t usually resist a series; this one I’ll pass on. We’re still looking for a good Christmas book that is not too Hallmark and not too cheesy. Any suggestions? I know we already wrote about what you look for in a holiday book, but I’m still curious and I need to start planning early!! Christmas will be here before we know it!
