Are you a classic novel reader? Do you enjoy all the metaphors and looking for specific themes and plots? I have to say for myself this is a mixed bag. I typically have a really hard time reading the classics. I’m not sure if it’s my brown knowing it’s one of “those school books” and then makes it more difficult for me or if they are truly potentially tough reads.
I’m currently reading Schindler’s List and having a tough time. Oddly enough, it’s not due to the topic but rather the writing style. I feel like these classics can be so bland and dry and drone on and on about stuff that after you read four chapters you think to yourself, “what did I just read??”
Then, I wonder, how did this book become a classic? What defines a “classic”? I do have some favorites. The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite classics. To Kill a Mockingbird is also great. I struggle with old English style writing so Jane Austen and Shakespeare are out for me.
Why are your thoughts on classics? Do you have favorites? Do you have gripes about them? Why are classics classics?
