Let’s Talk About…Writer’s Block

As readers, this is probably not a concern of ours, but maybe it should be. Writer’s block can be defined as being stuck in not knowing what or how to continue writing their manuscripts. We’ve commonly see this depicted in movies like The Shining, Secret Window, The Ghost Writer, and Stranger Than Fiction (https://whatculture.com/film/10-best-films-about-writers-block). Authors sleep deprived and depressed, grasping at straws to meet deadlines and expectations of their expected manuscripts.

Do you ever wonder how they actually make it through? I know I do. If I were in a professional desert and was expected to produce within a certain timeline, it would cause me severe anxiety as each passing day passed by.

Have you ever been in a “reader’s block?” Let’s create a definition of sort…you’re an avid reader and live life to read and be captivated in a story, but all of a sudden, no book gives you satisfaction. You try different genres, different authors. You even try out an audiobook to see if that will cure it, but nothing.

I’ve had these seasons before and there is no explanation of how I come back from that, I just all of a sudden get a book and I’m sucked back in. Sometimes, I do know that it is wrapped up in life circumstance and once I walk through that, I can resume. But I know the desperation I feel in those moments and can only imagine how it would be life if my income and reputation depended on this piece getting finished and being finished well (to my previous expected work ethic/ability).

Do you ever think about these things? Have you ever been in a “reader’s block”? Are you a writer who has experienced writer’s block? How do you move through that?
