Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know

by Alexandra Horowitz

This is not a typical book that I usually gravitate towards, but as some of you might know, my mother-in-law passed away few years ago and she had quite a collection. This book was on her shelf that I picked next for my read. I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised by this one. Its actually quite interesting and not just full of facts and statistics.

Horowitz is an animal behaviorist by trade as well as a dog lover personally. She describes her own relationship with her dogs as well as how it relates to how we as humans relate to dogs and the humanly evolution of dog culture.

Some of the chapters are a little long, but there are great stopping places, which are helpful when you can’t always commit to a 30-page chapter.

I have learned a lot about dogs, and this book has given me a perspective of how to teach my own pets and manage their behaviors. I think if you are a dog lover through and through and you like having trivia-esque facts about things, this is a great book for you. Horowitz does not write this as a research paper full of jargon but rather a lay person readable novel about our friendly animal family members.
