The Inmate

by Freida McFadden

Wow! This blew my mind! I’ve read McFadden before and this did not disappoint. Brooke is a nurse practitioner who lands a job in a prison as the primary care giver to the inmates. She is also working at the same prison as the person who tried to murder her. McFadden goes between present day and past so we learn what Brooke experienced as a 17 year old teenager, like this attempted murder.

We also find out that Brooke has a 10 year old son and he is the product of the relationship between Brooke and the (attempted) murderer. She hides who his father is for fear that he’d get more bullied than he’d already been at his old school.

Brooke has to treat Shane at the prison, and in the process reunites with her childhood best friend, Tim. Through time, we see that Brooke is trying to remember because everyone has put different thoughts in her head: Shane is innocent, Shane is manipulative, Tim did it. To the point that she finds herself confused and questioning her original memories.

The surprise ending is the best though. I thought I had it all figured out….boy, was I wrong!! And then, to add to it, there’s a second surprise at the very end. I don’t want to ruin it for you because if you haven’t read this, run to the nearest bookstore or stop reading this and go to your nearest digital reading app or library, wherever/however you read your books and start reading!
