by Hank Phillippi Ryan
This was an interesting read about a writer who is grieving her own tragedy when she gets commissioned to write a book about another tragedy, the trial of a woman accused of killing her daughter. Mercer is the author and her own tragedy is the sudden loss of her husband and daughter in a car crash.
The trial is triggering for Mercer but also in some ways an attempt to heal and move forward. Strange coincidences and odd information comes to light when Ashlyn, the acquitted murderer comes to stay with Mercer that gets Mercer reconsidering her whole life, including her husband’s fidelity and her best friend’s motives.
The ending is a twisty turn of events that sort of almost falls flat but you’re so shocked by it all that you’re caught up in it. I gave this one a five star. It was an easy read, the chapters are short and it was a nice paperback so easy to travel with! Definitely a recommend. I’ve never read her books before, but I like her style and would definitely go for another.
