Deceptive Calm

By Patricia Skipper

his book was fantastic. It was emotional and full of twists and turns. There was love, sadness, grief, despair and triumph. There should be a trigger warning on this one as there are some pretty graphic scenes of abortion and domestic violence.

Set in Charleston, SC, Vanessa is an orphan who is being raised by a nun, Sister Rosalie. She falls in love with a fellow Black man even though she hides her race for most of her life. Vanessa experiences a lot of loss and decides to start a new life. She moves to California and meets the man of her dreams. After the wedding, things change drastically.

I really enjoyed the writing style of this author. I am new to her work but would definitely love to read more of her work. I also enjoyed the setting in Charleston which I have some connections too. At first, I thought that it was going to be a type of historical fiction, which it definitely has some of those vibes.

If you like to learn some history, explore structural racism and the realities experienced by those victims of racism, Deceptive Calm, is for you. This is rated 10 out of 10.
